Digital Photographic Composits

Shaman of the Lake
A composite image composed of two distinct original images, both mirrored. An image of Mono Lake that was shot with a medium format camera on Fujichrome Velvia was scanned and processed digitally into a black and white image. Then, on a whim, I mirrored the image and tweaked the cropping a bit to achieve the basic image. The original image had a cloudless sky and I felt the composited image needed a more dynamic sky. I then took part of a sky from another image (originally shot on 35 mm, b&w film, then scanned to digital). That section of the sky was also mirrorred and brought into the composit image to replace the sky.
I am a rock
This image started as a digital photo captured at Fossil Falls State Park. Fossil Falls is an area of volcanic rock that had at one time been within a river that has since changed course and eventually disappeared. the volcanic rock was worn smooth buy the movement of the water and has further weathered over time. The left half of this image is the original captured image. I mirrored the original image and combined the two into a single composite image. After that it became a process of digitally dodging and burning  the image to accentuate the 3D appearance of the image.
 Ice Totems
The original images in this triptych were digital images of a thin layer of ice that had formed overnight over a very shallow creek in a desert canyon. The three images are each a mirroring and combining of an image.
 Separation
This is a combination of two very different images. The architectural portion is an image of the Boneventure Hotel in L.A. Which I had reduced to a very high contrast image using Lith film and processing. After scanning the 4X5 Lith film transparency I masked out the area that would have been the sky. I then brought into Photoshop the background image of the Minarets that was shot at sunset from near Mammoth Lakes, CA. The original image of the Minarets was captured from behind a dying tree which are reduced to a silhouette. Then, using various Photoshop "tools" I applied the the image of the Minarets over the glass of the building towers to create the appearance of the reflections.

I call this image "Separation" because i feel that it represents how we enclose ourselves in these hermetically sealed structures and only experience the beauty of our world from afar.
